As always, a new year comes with new goals and ambitions.
Here are some quick tips on how to set and execute on effective goals:
1. Be specific: Saying "I want to lose weight" is simply not good enough. Specify exactly how much weight you would like to lose.
2. Time bound: State exactly when you would like to achieve the goal you have set - "I would like to lose 5 kgs by Christmas"
3. Be realistic: Setting a goal which is very far out of reach can sometimes make you feel that the goal is way beyond your ability and can actually demotivate you. It is okay to be ambitious, but make sure the goal is actually achievable and you can see that goal insight.
4. Chunk your goals: Having just one big goal at the end of the year can often cause a detachment from your current reality to the goal itself. Mainly because the goal is so far away, you feel you can "put the work in" later on instead of right now. Always break down your goals into milestones. For example, if you want to lose 5 kgs by Christmas, set you first milestone as 2 kgs by April. Then another 2 by August. Then the final one by Christmas.
5. State your goals out loud: One of the biggest reasons people fail to reach their goals is because they have no accountability. They never tell anyone what their goals are which means no one will know if they give up. If you really want to succeed, you have to make your goals known. That way people can hold you accountable to them.
6. Have a plan: Last step. There is no point having this goal, bound by time, broken down into chunks and telling everyone if you are not going to act on it. If you don't make changes towards that goal, you will not achieve it. Make sure you have a well thought out plan which will guarantee you reach that goal if you stick to it.
Hopefully now your goal is looking a lot more structured and already the chances of success has increased.
