Self Discipline and Perseverance

And having a very bad, lifelong habit of abandoning stuff as soon as the going gets tough.

How do you stay committed to showing up for yourself consistently even when you really don't feel like it?

This is such a common issue and is usually caused due to a couple of reasons.

The good news is, that when training [or any important pursuit for that matter] is approached correctly these issues can become non-factors.

So here was my reply and advice.

For me showing up is very easy for a few reasons.

  • I love Training

  • I have clear goals that I want to achieve

  • I make sure my training fits my current life so that it’s easier to stay consistent.

  • I make my training easy to do so there’s very little barrier to getting a session started.

  • I’ve been lifting consistently for over 20 years so it’s very much a habit and part of my life

Now I know none of those things likely help you

BUT I would guess that if you’re abandoning training, or struggling to be consistent

it’s likely due to 1 or 2 things:

  • you don’t have a clear direction or goal for where you want your training to go

  • you don’t have a clearly defined and thought-out program

  • your training doesn’t fit your lifestyle so you can't be consistent

  • your training doesn't fit your ability to recover so you burn out.

  • you’re trying to do too much training too soon

  • you’re trying to do too much training too often

  • you’re trying to do too much training for too long

The best advice I can give you to help this situation is to:

  • have a clear goal that drives you.

  • have a training program that gets you to that goal

  • make that training program fit your current lifestyle

  • be realistic with the amount and type of training you do in that training program. It has to meet you where you are at right now.

  • make the training program easy to do in regards to starting a session, this removes a big barrier to getting a session started

and my final piece of advice and the one I believe to be most valuable.

Do what you know you can be 100% consistent with for the next 3-6 months.

Doing 6 sessions in week one is unrealistic and won’t help you long term.

If you know you can 100% do 3 sessions a week for the next 3-6 months, start there as that is realistic for you right now and you can always build upon that great starting point as you progress.

If you're struggling with consistency and self-discipline then review your current training

or whatever it is you're trying to be consistent and disciplined with.

Highlight where the barriers are and highlight where you're currently at with your life and where training fits within it.
