To fully understand nutrition we must accept and manage the following reality:
Calories Require Context.
In life we rarely make decisions about units of measurement without context and coaching (for nutrition, training, or health) should be no exception-
For example, let's use the unit of measurement for climate - temperature. The temperature might be above freezing, but we’d still want to know if it’s raining or not, as well as the wind or humidity.
When looking at another unit of measurement, distance, if we need to travel 100 miles we might want to be aware of things like available roads, transit systems, and/or weather.
Using the unit of measurement "one mile" we'd all acknowledge that walking one mile up a hill in the snow, or during a adverse weather conditions is significantly different than a flat mile on a sunny day in London. Your nutritional choices are not exempt from this.
The more context you have the better the decision for any dietary approach will be.
What’s your sleep like?
How often do you train?
What’s your lifestyle like?
Do you have a sedentary job?
How’s your insulin sensitivity?
Do you have any pre-existing health conditions?
What’s your hormonal profile like?
....the list goes on.
Dietary decisions should respect the nuance of nutrition. We have our own goals and bodies that benefit from tailoring an approach that accounts for these details....
Energy IS IMPORTANT, but also look to cultivate an understanding of what influences our body's receptivity to that energy (food), and the physical changes that follow.
